Statement:

Sky Sail is pieced together from community indigo-dyed fabric and donated

clothing. Nodding to Starr Kempf’s sky reaching wing forms, the curved and
planar textured layers of the “sail,” suspended by overhead cables, invite
passersby to wander under the gentle breeze of blue ombres. Like the
closeup petals of a butterfly wing, the sculpture exudes a soft invitation to
slow down, look up, take a breath, and embrace calm and connection with
our neighbors and friends.
The artists would like to extend their gratitude to everyone who participated in
this big community endeavor. The indigo linen, denim, and clothing were dyed
and sewn collaboratively during workshops at Flying Pig Farm, ZoneFive, and
the Manitou Art Center.

BLUE HANDS FESTIVAL at Manitou Art Center


We invited the region's communities to celebrate our collective voices through dyeing and sewing the Sky Sail sculpture fabric with us.


We invited everyone to learn about the indigo dyeing process, dye a linen, bandana-sized fabric square for our project, and bring their own small cotton or linen piece to dye in our indigo vats.


All participants were acknowledged in our collaboration for the exhibition, if they wanted to be included.

This collaborative suspended sculpture is part of the upcoming We Are the Sky: A GOCA Collaboratory exhibition at the Marie Walsh Sharpe Gallery at the ENT Center on campus at UCCS.
